Glamorous, sexy and sometimes quirky pinups all beautifully illustrated, 100% full color. Big "coffee table" style book.
I bought this as a gift and it was very well accepted. Fast shipping and in perfect condition.
The first edition is a sought after collector's item, and later editions were printed in smaller formats and in paperback. So if you are a fan of Elvgren, or just discovered this master, get this book while you can. To fully enjoy Elvgren's work, it must be in hardcover, and in this large format. The reason why I bought this particular edition is that I wore out my softcover version of this book. Gil Elvgren's cheesecake paintings cannot be matched even by today's standards. As a photographer and artist, I whole-heartedly agree on the comments of the previous reviewers of this excellent book. They inspire, but cannot be imitated. It should be noted, that this is the second printing of this book in hardcover.
This is a great product for a great price. The print is clear and concise, colors are true and vibrant.I'd truly recommend this book for any fan, or any one looking to find a good reference for this art.
This book is a perfect introduction to an incredible genius and an incredible artform Your eyes are attracted to the girls, however, other elements like a dog, a turtle, a prop like a diary, add to the charm of the work and to the total innocence of the girls. As Rockwell held a mirror up to the American public, Elvgren manage to evoke Rockwellesque subtleties into his work too. The luscious and lovingly delivered colour plates (some 500 of them) demonstrate Elvgren's evolution into the auteur of pin up illustrators, as he progressively developed real depth into to his work. Without any knowledge; yet a curious fascination for a bygone era, I perused many of the illustrators famous for their cheesecake-girl-next-door pin ups of the fifties on the web. Gil Elvgren came up tops. Living in the current "Raunch Culture" where female nudity is pervasive, this book transports you back to another time where the girls exude a level of desirability that Elvgren perfectly captured in his work.
